City of Chastre
Chastre is a French-speaking municipality of Belgium located in the Walloon Region in the province of Walloon Brabant.
Its name comes from the Roman castra “fortress, fortified camp”2, inherited from the Latin castra, plural of castrum “retrenchment, fortified place”3.
A town that is both rural and residential, with a population of 7,726, Chastre groups together seven old villages: Chastre, Villeroux, Blanmont, Cortil-Noirmont, Gentinnes and Saint-Géry. It is crossed to the south by the old Chaussée Brunehaut, a Roman road that linked Bavai to Cologne.
Located between Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve and Gembloux, 40 km from Brussels, it is well served by the road and rail networks.
A modest river, the Orne, crosses it from side to side, contributing with its tributaries to create landscapes whose discovery charms the eye, enshrining in particular superb farms, often still in full activity. Its highest point is located at 165 meters above sea level.
It was twinned with the municipality of Lespignan (Hérault) 7 km from Béziers in 1998.
